After 42 years of delivering quality culturally appropriate legal assistance to the Aboriginal Community the Commonwealth Government has defunded the Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service.
The Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal program has complied with all funding requirements in the history of the organisation. We have never breached our compliance and have an impeccable financial record.
You cannot duplicate or replicate a holistic community controlled service outside the community. No other State, organisation nor agency would be able to administer culturally appropriate legal services to Aboriginal people in Tasmania.
The consequence of this decision will be higher incarceration rates of Aborigines, increased work for Tasmanian Police and impact on our court system due to the cost cutting of delivery services of vulnerable Aboriginal clients in Tasmania.
