Reviving place names
IT is pleasing to hear from new Liberal Aboriginal Affairs Minister Jaquie Petrusma that her Government is firmly behind dual naming. The minister also understands it makes sense to revive original names of places. But why the Government would shy away from nipaluna (the name of the area Hobart was built on) and embrace kunanyi (original name of Mt Wellington) is hard to follow.

nipaluna is the name of the country in which the city of Hobart sits.
This was the name known by the Aboriginal people of the south east.
The town came later, in 1804, and it was well established within nipaluna by the time that Wurati first shared the name and its meaning with government agent George Augustus Robinson, as ‘country at Hobart Town’ on 16 January 1831.
